Hello everyone. To my great joy, I was able to download Tongxin Desktop Personal Edition from the official site (www.chinauos.com) at a high internet speed, although I am a resident of Greece. Does this mean that I can actually use the operating system in English and even pay for an annual subscription? Thanks in advance.

@nikoslagios hi there,

UOS is a business Operating System, intended for use in mainland China only.  Now if something has changed recently I'm not aware of it. If you want to use something like it then Deepin Community Desktop is still your best choice IMHO.

Cheers!

@nikoslagios sure, anytime, Honestly I'm not sure that you can even use UOS outside China because it asks for specific information and some ID if I'm not mistaken that you can only provide if you live in continental China.

Greetings.

@eli I eventually installed UnionTech Desktop 20 Home 1030 on my laptop. The activation was pretty easy and free of charge. The only extra thing I had to do compared to Deepin, was to ask for permission to use sudo privileges (the procedure took a few minutes to finish, after obtaining a "certificate" from the company). Compared to Deepin, I found it a little more conservative but I guess this happens in commercial distros.

@nikoslagios excellent, I'm glad that it worked out for you. So you didn't need anything special? About that certificate you said you received, you didn't have to pay for it? How did you manage? Everything is in Mandarin on their site.

Regards.

@Эли I had registered in uniontech site a few months ago but whenever I tried to download the iso, an error message always appeared. That was due to the "great firewall of china" that prevents internet access to mainland China for both residents and foreigners. Three days ago, not only did I manage to download the iso, but this happened at a high internet speed. This fact proved that access to the commercial editions was allowed for foreigners as well. About the os, the activation is achieved just by clicking a button and then you have access to updates. There is a paying option for extra features that is not activated in China either (judging by a pre-sale offer of 99 yuan / 12.64 euros, the final subscription must be quite affordable). Take care.

@nikoslagios wow how interesting! Thanks for reporting back on this. It looks like things might have changed then. (Or maybe I was mistaken? ? )

I could swear that initially access to UOS was limited to mainland China only. Were you able to make the OS display its GUI In English or whichever your native language is? How stable is it compared to Deepin? Is it faster? Do you notice any major features missing?

Best regards.

@ Эли the available languages are the same as in Deepin. I have been using English as the system language. The only drawback was the Deepin browser which was entirely in Chinese, so I installed the Opera browser. Deepin constitutes the upstream version and it gets the new features first - UnionTech has still kernel 5.4.50-amd64-desktop. The system is stable, but I think it is a little more memory-consuming (973MB-1.44GB) than Deepin. The only missing feature is the switch between circled and squared window edges!

@nikoslagios that sounds wonderful, seems like they are pretty much identical for the most part except older kernel. Perhaps in the future I might install it in my server computer.

Greetings!

It would shock you how generous a lot of successful people are with their time and knowledge as long as you ask politely, respect boundaries (i.e. if they offer you 15 minutes of their time, don't try to take an hour), do your homework and come prepared with constructive questions, and ideally are working in their area of expertise and pique their curiosity with what you're trying to do. If you've got good chemistry sometimes they'll offer to provide ongoing insight. If not, you've benefitted from 15 minutes of picking an expert's brain for free. Reach out via LinkedIn or other avenues and express genuine curiosity. i.e.
